Mini Grant Recipients for the 2019-2020 School Year
This year, several teachers from the Guadalupe Union School District received Mini Grants from the Foundation aimed at helping the students of Guadalupe reach new academic, cultural and athletic goals in our schools. Check out some of their projects below:
Fun With Stem by Nicole Hardman (Mary Buren)
Fun with STEM/STEAM will help the students learn through Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. I want to implement STEM/STEAM to get the students learning through hands-out and fun ways. STEM/STEAM will help the students use their imagination and succeed in this information based and highly technological society.
Dramatic Play for TK by Robin Sumabat (Mary Buren)
I would like to create a Doll Dramatic Play Center in my TK Classroom. Many of my TK students need to learn to empathize & demonstrate kindness toward others. At their young age, they are used to being "the baby" themselves & thinking only about their own wants and needs. Through dramatic play, students can grow social-emotionally to learn to care about the wants and needs of others. The KSEP (Kindergarten Student Entrance Profile) data over the years consistently shows that even though a student might be high academically, they are usually low social-emotionally as they enter my classroom for the first time. I believe that this doll dramatic play center will help my students engage in cooperative and dramatic play during center time.
Art with Forces in Motions by Michelle Berry (Mary Buren)
Students will be learning about forces, motion, and magnets in science lab and through our Mystery Science curriculum. I would love to make the connection to art in the classroom. We have so little time for students to do art in the classroom, and I would really like to see some of my students participate in the spring Art Gala as well. This will not only encourage students to be a part of our community, but also to express themselves in a creative way outside of our current curriculum demands.

Science Lab Coats by Mehgan Gardner (Mary Buren and Mckenzie)
The goal is to create a science lab experience that is as authentic as possible. Students already enjoy using the science lab supplies and equipment when they come to clas, but the lab coats add much more personal touch to the experience. They give each student an individual feeling of significance and bring them closer to the subject matter, making them feel much more like scientist.
Sensory is the Key by Monserrat Garcia (Mary Buren)
The objective of this project is to teach my students the appropriate time in which a break is needed. Also, how to express themselves for a break. Lastly, how to clearly teach where break or play is appropriate. This will allow students the opportunity to engage in sensory breaks and increase productivity by establishing defined break times.
Drama Club Funds by Kelli Brill (Mary Buren)
This year i will be putting on a play with 3rd through 8th grade students. For the last two years, we've had anywhere between 20-25 kids participate. Last year, we put on Beauty and the Beast and the students did a wonderful performance! This year in the spring we'll be performing another play, and thanks to these funds we will have some awesome, official costumes and props!
College Bound by Jamie Cuello (Mary Buren)
College Bound will take 50 DBE Students to visit and explore Cal Poly State University STEM Education departments. Visiting campus will provide college career readiness for all students.
Social Thinkers by Courtney Lagorio (Mary Buren)
Social communication is a crucial part of my students' everyday lives. These resources help teach social communication skills, such as whole body listening, being flexible, and expected/unexpected behaviors, through books and play based activities. Social communication is important in order to build social relationships with others, and plays an important part in their academic success as many curriculum based activities focus on collaboration and communication between peers. Single hit buttons provide a way for children that may not have a voice a way to communicate.

Buenos Lectores Hoy, Super Estrellas Mañana by Susan Mosqueda (Mary Buren)
This is my first year teaching the DLI class and am in need of Spanish Books in order to create a classroom library, and leveled readers to send home so they may practice reading at their level, at home with their family. One objective is that students will learn to love reading/books. Another objective is that students will gain confidence, identify sight words found in the books, and increase their fluency through frequent practice. Another objective is to increase the literacy in their home.

Speak Up by Megan Dodge (Mary Buren)
Project "Speak Up" will encourage all students to participate in class discussions. I will be purchasing a "Qball" which is a throwable wireless microphone. The key objective is that students will listen to and be heard by their peers. The Qball will promote attentiveness to the speaker so that the entire class can be engaged in and comment on the ideas being shared. Quiet and shy students will have their voices amplified, allowing for their ideas to be considered and valued. Another objective is to increase student engagement in discussion by creating a fun and "playful" (relaxed) atmosphere.

A Bit of Bobcats Sparkle by Ana Snelling (Mary Buren)
I have recently completed supplemental art training through the Deep Space Sparkle web site. It would be my pleasure to extend this knowledge with 1st and 2nd grade students. This grant will allow me to bring art supplies to make the experience richer with more art mediums. Our students will learn about line, shape , color, and pattern using examples from a contemporary artist.

Full STEAM ahead by Shannon Brough (Mary Buren)
Students will be learning early concepts of programming while fostering 21st century skills through engaging activities. Some of these activities include things such as programming characters in a story, drawing geometric shapes, learning spelling, and figuring out perimeter. The ideas are endless and there's an entire website that already has lesson plans and activities available and ready to use that are aligned to the Common Core Standards.

One Car to Rule them All by Jeff Foote (McKenzie)
Students in all 6th grade classes will work with a partner to embody the principles of engineering in a progression of 'car designs' which leave behind the combustion engine, and explore how to power in alternative ways. They will have a chance to compete among themselves in celebratory Field Days space throughout the year. They will learn how to use 4 kinds of models: Mental, mathematical, scientific, and engineering, to see with their whole selves how human inventiveness takes shape. Since 6th grade has no science/engineering curriculum, this shared project will allow all teachers and students to experience and learn together.
Cross Country Track Entries and Shorts by Terry Bauer (McKenzie)
Thanks to this grant we will be able to cover the entry fees for competitions and start a supply of team shorts for athletes to purchase. The objective is to allow all who wish to compete, to do so, without being hampered by the price of the competitions.

Green Machine Band by Charles Kim (McKenzie)
I am in the process of building up a self-sustaining band program and culture for students to experience the joys of making music and learning how to play an instrument. Students will learn how to take care of an instrument and along with it, develop the skills and discipline in order to succeed in this (any) environment. These students will have opportunities to develop their musical skills, watch musical performances, and engage with the community through the facet of band.

Take Us to the Moxi! by Simone Flemmer (McKenzie)
Every year, the 7th grade class takes a field trip to Santa Barbara in May. This year while in Santa Barbara, we will now be able to take students to the Moxi, The Wolf Museum of Innovation. This museum provides students with the opportunity to learn more about science and be creative with the hands on activities the museum provides.

Boys and Girls Basketball Warmup Shirts by Scott Smith (McKenzie)
My goal as the Athletic Director is to give each of our programs what they need to be successful and encourage teamwork. I believe having warm up jerseys that match is essential for a basketball program and gives the students confidence in their appearance. We currently only have uniforms, basketball season is during the winter and last year I noticed we were warming up with random hoodies and sweatshirts on. Having team issued shirts to wear will make us look more like a team and encourage unity.
Diversity Day by Alex Jauregui (McKenzie)
Providing students the opportunity to experience and interact with other cultures, not only helps them learn about the various differences within our society, but it also enables them to develop an appreciation for the diversity on our campus. We are looking at creating a Diversity Day at KMIS that would bring in multiple cultural activities/experiences (mariachi group, ballet folklorico group, pacific islander, American Indian, etc) that would help enhance our students' understandings of how diverse our nation and society truly are.
