Mini grants Recipients for 2017
This year, several teacher from the GUSD received mini-grants from the foundation aimed at helping the student of Guadalupe to reach new academic, cultural or athletic goals in our school. Check out some of the projects below and some pictures of what teacher are doing with the students.
Number Corners by Ashley Thompson (3rd Grade)
From year to year, I have noticed a pattern of students coming to 3rd grade without basic computational math skills, like adding and subtracting within 1,000, understanding measurement and geometric shapes, etc. Research shows that spiraling math skills throughout the year can improve students' computational math skills, and the Number Corner program by The Math Learning Center is designed to do just that. Each month focuses on a different skill and reiterates learning from throughout the year to really solidify the students' understanding of numbers and operations, fractions, geometry, measurement, time, graphing, and place value.

Mystery Readers by Michelle Berry (3rd Grade)
Third grade is receiving a new readers workshop unit called, Mystery: Foundational Skills in Disguise. As part of this unit, students will be immersed in reading different mystery books at their level as they follow ideas across their texts, seeing cause-and-effect relationships, and predicting outcomes. This project would provide our classroom with a highly engaging bundle of books (67 titles, 81 books) that would cover all reading ranges.

Read Along Listening Centers by Robin Patchett (Transitional Kinder)
Many of our TK students do not have the opportunity to be read to by their parents at home. This makes our students less familiar with concepts of print and less likely to have developed a love of literature. Read-along books on CD would give our TK students more opportunities to listen to great literature with all of the sound effects that bring the stories to life.

Read Along Listening Centers by Terri Smith (Transitional Kinder)
This listening center will help our students have the opportunity to develop a love of literature. Many of our students lack exposure and concepts of print at home and being able to give them this experience at school would help spur their desire to read more.

1-1 Classroom Implementation by Jesse Sanford (2nd Grade)
With a completely 1-1 classroom environment, I will be able to implement an entirely new way of lesson design in my classroom. With the use of these devices, I will be able to provide students with ongoing feedback, and adaptive technology will be used to meet students at their own levels. This will also allow me to take a step toward becoming a more "paper-less" classroom, by allowing more technology-based assignment submissions.

Need the E in STEM by Sarah Holland (Kinder)
My students are in need of engineering play and learning opportunities in the classroom. Studies show that play-based STEM activities are a key of effective early learning. These activity centers will enable students to explore and develop their knowledge of engineering using science and math.

Knitting/Sewing Elective by Rosie Garcia (6-8 Grade)
My primary objective is that students have a creative outlet and begin to learn to focus while creating their projects. I have heard from some of my colleagues, that students who are engaged in making items in my elective class have become more focused in their academic classes because they have a way to manage their extra energy, or stress, and that they feel some sense of accomplishment in school when they may not be feeling that in their academic classes. In turn, that feeling of accomplishment is something that their content area teachers can build on to help students engage in their academic coursework and help build their self-esteem.

Intervention to Art by Simone Flemmer (6-8 Grade)
My objectives for both the books and art supplies is to keep students interested and motivated in class. Academically, students will be able to read books that are at their level and that are of interest to them. This will improve their overall reading scores. Students, in art, will also be able to learn about different mediums and proper art techniques.

Soy Bilingue! by Sandra Bravo (6-7 Grade)
For the first time ever, McKenzie offers Spanish Reading instruction. At this time, we have four classes promoting bi-literacy skills. Although we have basic curriculum for these classes, the students need other opportunities to promote & practice their bilingualism. We need to encourage pride in earning two languages! One way to do this is through journalism. The students will use a camera to take pictures of specific topics and write about them in a newsletter. They will then create brochures of McKenzie & the Guadalupe Community. These will be written in both languages. Topics may include family, friends, traditions, historic sites, important people in the community, and school.

Art Class By Erin Van De Roovaart (6-8 Grade)
The objective of Mrs. V's art class is to teach students basic art skills in the areas of drawing, painting, and sculpture. Also, the class focuses on twelve famous artists and many of the projects are inspired by these artists' works. The goal of the art class is to teach student art skills as well as art appreciation. By the end of the class, they should be able to go to any major museum and recognize at least one artist. However, students have recognized Monet's on the Santa Barbara trip and Ganz sculptures on a Monterey Bay aquarium trip. It is always exciting when the students get excited about recognizing a famous artist!
